Duck with special rice from Jasmine Restaurant, Warilla:Vanessa Pike-Russell

It was my birthday on October 17th and my husband decided to treat me to dinner at the Jasmine Restaurant in Warilla ahead of our birthday celebration at the Sydney Night Noodle Markets the next night. Not wanting to overdo it we decide upon one entrée and one main to share, with rice.

Seated in the recently renovated restaurant in George Street, Warilla we ordered a mixed entrée, a beer and a West Coast Cooler from the drinks menu. I know it is very 80s of me but that was what I used to drink when I was 18 and it always makes me smile and feel like a party.

As we sat perusing the duck section of the menu we spotted 'Duck with Special Sauce - $14.90'.

Intrigued, I asked the friendly waitress what was in the special sauce.

"Chicken, beef and prawn", she replied.

The looks exchanged between myself and my husband mirrored our confusion. When you see 'special sauce' you imagine the ingredients to be... sauce... not two types of meat and seafood. Feeling adventurous we decided to give into our inquisitive natures.

The mixed entrée arrived quickly and with a smile. I loved the crab claw and the moist crab flesh. Hubby loves the prawn toast and together we make quick work of the entrée and dipping sauces.

When the main meal arrived with the perfectly cooked roast duck topped with chicken, beef and prawn we were pleasantly surprised and tried to identify the ingredients of the sauce. The dish was cooked to perfection with the vegetables slightly crunchy, the sauce gentle and flavoursome and combination of duck with the meats and seafood very tasty.

You cannot see the duck in this photo as it is underneath the other layers but we can attest that it was very delicious. We ascertained that there was oyster sauce, sesame oil, perhaps some fish sauce and a hint of lemongrass but to make sure we will go back and sample this dish again. Great value for money and a colourful presentation, served with a smile.

Really lives up to its name!
Now that it is winter and I have a cold I crave soups. My favourite soups include Laksa,  Tom Yum and Combination short soup. All of which are available at the Delicious Noodle House in George Street, Warilla.
I have tried six of their dishes now and each one was very delicious and great value for money.

Apologies for the low quality
image from my mobile phone.

One of the many budget meals available from Kings Chinese Food Takeaway at Warilla Grove Shopping Centre is Seafood Combination Chow Mein. Only $5 it includes prawns, seafood extender, fish balls, squid and fish as well as delicious vegetables sauted perfectly with delicate flavours of seseme oil. The noodles are cooked separately and have a slight chilli warmth. The perfect meal for the cold rainy weather we've been having today.

Cheesecake with strawberry:Vanessa Pike-Russell

This absolutely delicious slice of cheesecake was purchased at Queen St Bakery, Warilla. I decided to use a touch of blue as the background and added a heart detail which I use on personalised greeting cards. I'm liking the colours in this. Thanks to Phil who held the reflector for me.

Alternatively, try a Gourmet Meat pie - home made meat pie in a ceramic bowl with big chunks of beef with a lovely gravy and a tasty crust.

Or try the basket of Chilli Fries for $3.95. Try to stop at just one!

TANDOORI TENDERLOIN SALAD $12.90
Slices of Chicken Supreme Marinated in Tandoori Spices Tossed with Crisp
Mesculan Leaves, Drizzled with Garlic Aioli Sauce and Mango Chutney

I had spied this dish on the menu on my last visit and I was not disappointed. The tandoori marinade had lots of flavour, the chicken was moist and the salad fresh and full of flavour. A good choice if you are on a low-carb diet or want a meal which will leave some room for dessert.

BARRACK POINT BEEF $25.90
Prime Fillet Steak Topped with a King Prawn, Calamari,
Half Morton Bay Bug and Béarnaise Sauce

Every mouthful was full of flavour. The steak was cooked as a medium when medium rare was requested, although you didn't hear any murmur of dissatisfaction with the flavour or tenderness. The balmain bug was a bit on the small side but very tasty, as were the prawns and calimari. The bernaise sauce was heavenly. Definitely the meal to choose if you can't pick between steak and seafood.

Barkers Creek Pork King Rib Cutlet 300g $22.90

On Spring Onion Mash, Field Mushrooms and Red Wine Sauce

My friend Stan had wanted to dry this dish for a while and was full of praise at the first bite. I sampled a small portion and agreed - it was heavenly and definitely a meal to be experienced. The red wine sauce really complimented the juicy pork cutlet. The vegetables were fresh and well cooked. A new favourite. Bring your appetite!

Strawberry Cheesecake
An amazing dessert plate from Emeralds Restaurant. This quartet of taste sensations was shared between two people and was an amazing finish to the night's feasting.

Freshly made cheesecake with strawberry sauce, strawberry icecream and strawberry cream with a fresh strawberry garnish. Delicious!

Another great meal from Emeralds Restaurant. This time it was lunch and they have a great lunch specials menu. As you may know, I am a big fan of seafood so I decided to try the Emeralds Seafood Basket.

The highlight of this was the amazing prawn spring roll and herb encrusted prawns that were in the seafood platter from Valentines Day. Absolutely divine! The batter was very tasty and not oily. The salad was very nice and a great complement.

As usual I couldn't get through the whole meal and ended up taking it home to enjoy later. Great value for money. I will have fun working my way through the menu at Emeralds restaurant.

Other meals which met with approval were the Scotch Fillet with prawns and a delicious Bernaise Sauce, and Chicken Parmigiana (Tender Crumbed Breast, Fried and Topped with
Fresh Tomato, Basil and Grilled Cheese)

What a feast! Tonight I had Chicken Schnitzel with mushrooms and a creamy sauce. A glass of wine accompanied the meal at $13 price tag.

The view from the window of Emeralds was stunning, overlooking Warilla Beach

What a view! Tonight I dined at Emeralds restaurant at Warilla Bowling club.

After dinner I attended the Kiama/Shellharbour Camera Club held at the Sapphire Conference room. Tonight's club meeting was a nature competition and the quality of entries were astounding! I was happy to meet up with some great local flickr people. A wonderful night!
